Mitte remains liveable, becomes more liveable

How do we respond to the challenges of the growing city in the coming years? How can we create safer, quieter streets for people who live, work or visit the Mitte district?

One possibility is traffic-calmed blocks between the main roads with a particularly high quality of life, so-called Kiezblocks. The district administration is investigating whether, where and how exactly these can be created.

Are you wondering what the implementation of Kiezblocks in the Mitte district means for you and how you can contribute your ideas and needs? Find out more on this page.

To ensure that Mitte remains a good place to live, the public space needs to be reorganized – and you can help shape this change!

Why? Because!
And together with you.

80,000 people have moved to Berlin Mitte in the last 20 years. However, the space on streets, sidewalks and in parks has not grown – more and more people are using the same amount of space. They live or work in the district, go out, visit friends or relatives and go shopping here.

In addition, the use of parcel and delivery services and sharing services such as e-scooters is increasing – all of which require more and more space. These diverse uses are making public spaces more congested and causing traffic jams, less peace and quiet and poor air quality – a burden for everyone.

Safe mobility in liveable Kiezes

Kiezblocks are designed to ensure that Mitte remains liveable – and even becomes more so. To this end, there are suitable measures for every Kiez , e.g. to direct motor vehicle traffic.

In this way, traffic-calmed blocks can be created between the main roads, so-called Kiezblocks. More peace and quiet and better air, more safety on foot and by bike – that sounds great, doesn’t it?

Nevertheless, you don’t have to do without your car

All buildings will remain easily accessible for emergency services, refuse collection and delivery traffic. Residents can also continue to drive to their homes by car – only the route may be different.

Up to 12 new Kiezblocks
by spring 2026

Of course, the public space in the entire Mitte district cannot be reorganized overnight. By spring 2026, we want to create up to 12 new Kiezblocks where the Kiez is suitable for a Kiezblock and where there is too much through traffic.

All Kieze in the Mitte district are being examined for their suitability as Kiezblock. 28 Kieze are selected where traffic calming promises the greatest increase in quality of life. Traffic counts will also be carried out to find out whether a Kiezblock is necessary at all.

Your Kiez has been selected? Then it’s your turn. You can contribute your comments and needs in an initial online participation.

Based on the results of the participation and traffic counts, around 25 Kieze will be selected for which specific neighborhood block designs will be drawn up.

The next round of participation begins: you can discuss the design for your Kiez and give feedback during a walk through your Kiez and in the next online participation.

Taking the participation results into account, up to 12 Kieze are selected and the Kiezblock concepts are developed.

Between summer 2025 and spring 2026, the Kiezblocks be implemented.

The success of the measures will be evaluated. We will keep you up to date on participation opportunities.

This pilot project is being launched by the Mitte district ‘s roads and green spaces department.

It is supported by experts in transport and urban planning and citizen participation from the offices of gruppe F | Freiraum für alle GmbH and STRATMO Strategische Mobilitätsplanung, as well as with funding from the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment.
