Mitte stays liveable, becomes lovable
For Mitte to remain a good place to live the public space needs to be reorganised – and you can help shape this change!
Why? Because!And together with you.
80,000 people have moved to Berlin Mitte in the last 20 years. However, the space on streets, pavements and in parks has not grown – more and more people are using the same amount of space. They live or work in the district, go out, visit friends or relatives and go shopping here.
The use of parcel and delivery services as well as sharing services such as e-scooters is also increasing – all of this requires more and more space. These diverse uses make public spaces more crowded and cause congestion, less peace and quiet and poor air quality – a burden for everyone.

Safe mobility in liveable neighbourhoods
Neighbourhood blocks are designed to ensure that Mitte remains liveable – and even becomes more liveable. There are suitable measures for each neighbourhood, e.g. to direct motor vehicle traffic.
For example, traffic-calmed blocks can be created between the main roads, so-called neighbourhood blocks. More peace and quiet and better air, more safety on foot and by bike – that sounds great, doesn’t it?
Nevertheless, you don’t have to do without your car
All buildings will remain easily accessible for emergency services, refuse collection and delivery traffic. Residents can also continue to drive to their homes by car – only the route may be different.

Up to 12 new neighbourhood blocks by spring 2026
Of course, the public space in the entire Mitte district cannot be reorganised overnight. By spring 2026, we want to create up to 12 new neighbourhood blocks where the neighbourhood is suitable for a neighbourhood block and where there is too much through traffic.
All neighbourhoods in the Mitte district are being examined for their suitability as a neighbourhood block. 28 neighbourhoods will be selected where traffic calming promises the greatest increase in quality of life. Traffic counts will also be carried out to find out whether a neighbourhood block is necessary at all.
Has your neighbourhood been selected? Then it’s your turn. You can contribute your comments and needs in an initial online participation.
Based on the results of the participation and the traffic counts, around 24 neighbourhoods will be selected for which specific neighbourhood block designs will be drawn up.
The next round of participation begins: you can discuss the design for your neighbourhood and give feedback during a walk through your neighbourhood and in the next online participation.
Taking the participation results into account, up to 12 neighbourhoods will be selected and the neighbourhood block concepts developed.
The neighbourhood blocks are to be completed between summer 2025 and spring 2026.
The success of the measures will be evaluated. We will keep you up to date on participation opportunities.

This pilot project is being launched by the Mitte district’s roads and green spaces department.
It is supported by experts in transport and urban planning and citizen participation from the offices of gruppe F | Freiraum für alle GmbH and STRATMO Strategische Mobilitätsplanung, as well as with funding from the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment.
